Fillers: everything you need to know

You’ve probably already noticed. The use of fillers has been accepted by the general public and has increased enormously in recent years. In the past, fillers are used to fill wrinkles and restore volume loss due to aging. Nowadays, fillers are increasingly used to reshape your cheekbone, chin, lips or nose or to correct asymmetry in the face. All the more we at Skin + Surgery Clinics find it important that you are aware of the latest developments. That is why we tell all the ins and outs about fillers today.

Did you know?

  • There are more than 160 filler products on the market worldwide. Skin + Surgery Clinics only uses A-brand fillers such as Restylane or Belotero. Only the best for you.
  • Fillers can also be used for your body, for example to rejuvenate your hands or to treat your stretch marks after pregnancy.
  • Hyaluronic acid fillers (HA) can be dissolved with an enzyme Hyalase. If you do not like your filler treatment or if you find your lips a bit too full, we can remove the filler professionally.
  • Doctor Kim de Weijer and Doctor Lianne Wong are both certified cosmetic doctors KNMG and each have more than 10 years of experience in botulinum toxin and filler treatments.
  • Our doctor Thanya Tha-In, together with her specialist colleagues, has written the “NVCG field standard filler treatments”. This contains the standard guidelines that doctors must meet in order to perform a filler treatment and what doctors must do in the event of complications.

Which filler do you need?

A personal approach is very important with a filler treatment. It is important that our doctors understand your wishes. Important questions during a consultation are: how long the filler will last, how much filler is needed, what skin type you have and what the expected result is after a filler treatment.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is one of the most popular ingredients used in fillers. It is a natural substance found in the body, and high concentrations can be found in soft, connective tissue and the fluid around the eyes. Lower concentrations can also be found in some cartilage, joint fluids, and skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid filler is ideal for cheeks, puppet lines, crease nose lips, smokers’ lines and even acne scars.

For deeper lines and wrinkles, a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) filler (Radiesse) should be considered. CaHA is a mineral-like substance that occurs naturally in human bones. This is often used when you want to reshape or accentuate your bone structures. CaHA gives a natural result that lasts 12 to 18 months. This filler should not be used on the under eyes, lips or other areas of the thin skin due to possible lumps, bumps and nodules from the thickness of the product.

How is the treatment going?

First, your doctor will review your facial contours and discuss the areas you want to target. Your photos will be taken and injection points will be marked on your face.

After cleaning the injection site, the injections are administered, followed by massaging and evaluation of the results. Additional filler can be added if necessary. Treatment is usually quick and takes about 15 minutes.

How’s the recovery?

Recovery from dermal filler injections is a fairly straightforward process. You will most likely experience swelling and bruising. Avoid strenuous activities such as exercise or sauna visit for 24-48 hours.

When a filler treatment is done by an experienced doctor, fillers are an incredibly safe way to improve facial contours.
