Me, a facelift?
Getting older is a special gift. After the age of 50, you are full of beautiful and less beautiful life experiences, but your face no longer reflects how you feel inside. Maybe itâs the wrinkles, maybe itâs the sagging skin. If you are considering a facelift, this is a personal choice. A choice only you and your doctor can make together. Is it necessary? Isnât it too early? Am I not going to look completely different? When will I be presentable again? These questions are a small selection from the first facelift consultation.
A facelift is a treatment that is performed when the skin on your face starts to sag with age. During the procedure, the skin and the underlying connective tissue layer are tightened and lifted. This gives your face, neck and jawline a youthful contour. Everything about the treatment is discussed during the first consultation with me. I discuss which method suits you best, what results you can expect, what possible risks there are and how the aftercare will proceed. You always get clear and honest advice. Even if the prolapse is minimal, I advise you to postpone the procedure or even not to do it.
If you google the word facelift, you will be inundated with terms that are new. There are different types of lift and it seems as if every surgeon does it slightly differently. To create a little more clarity, different types of lift are explained in more detail below:
- S-LIFT, is also called the mini lift. A small incision is made for your ear. Only the skin of the cheek lifted. The underlying supporting tissue (SMAS layer) is not lifted.
- MACS lift: MACS lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension lift) not only takes the skin of the cheek but also the underlying support tissue (SMAS layer) along and lifted. The jawline is not included in this
- Facelift: In a facelift, an incision is made in front of your ear with an extended incision behind the ear. Then the skin of the cheek, the underlying support tissue (SMAS layer) and the jawline is lifted.
- Neck lift: In a neck lift, an incision is made behind the ear and extended to the hairline. If indicated, an incision is also made under the chin. The neck muscles are stitched together and the skin is stretched. Sometimes fat is also removed from the double chin with the help of liposuction.
During the treatment you will get a âintoxicationâ. This means that you are asleep and you donât feel pain. The incision is made in front of your ear and along your hairline. Then the skin is detached from the subcutaneous connective tissue layer (SMAS). This SMAS layer is pulled tight and attached with a special adhesive. Finally, the excess skin is cut away and stitched. The procedure itself takes about 150 minutes. It takes about 1-2 weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside.
Before undergoing a facelift, it is important that you are aware of the procedure and the possible complications. The first step starts with you. Check carefully why you want a facelift, let your doctor inform you and discuss your alternatives. You can take the time for it. Itâs your face!
