THE POWER OF PEELINGS

As a skin therapist, I often get the question: what can I do to improve my skin, to give my skin a boost? I would like to do just that little bit more for my skin than a standard facial. My answer then is always: a chemical peel!

The epidermis (outer layer of the skin) has the special property of renewing itself on average once every 20 days. The skin cells migrate from the inside to the surface of the skin and lie on top of each other. In this way, they form the skin barrier that protects us from moisture loss and harmful external influences, such as UV radiation and pathogens, among others. Unfortunately, as we age, this process slows down and it can sometimes take more than 70 days for the skin to renew itself. As a result, the epidermis thickens, the skin barrier actually diminishes, and skin condition deteriorates. As a result, a skin's beautiful glow disappears and looks dull.

Help! What can be done about this?
There are many different treatments aimed at skin improvement. But, one treatment that really focuses on removing old, dead skin cells is a chemical peel! The chemical peel is applied and interacts with the skin. This stimulates the skin's exfoliation process and makes room for new, young skin cells. The skin will regain its radiance. Thereby, depending on the active ingredient, specific work can be done on skin problems such as skin ageing, impurities, acne, acne scars and pigmentation spots.
Which peel is right for me?
There are many different types of peels and several peels can be good for one skin. A distinction is often made between very superficial to deep peelings. This refers to how deep the peel penetrates into the skin. Very superficial peels are a popular part of many treatments. The advantage is that no recovery time is needed, but the skin gets a boost! After such a peeling, the active ingredients of a mask, for example, will be absorbed even better or a cream will penetrate even better. The advantage is also that little to no recovery time is needed, but the skin does get a boost. Ideal as a treatment for a party or to give the skin an extra treat. Superficial peels penetrate slightly deeper into the skin and are often a stand-alone treatment. Because this treatment is just a little more intensive, it can also address superficial skin problems such as dull, dull skin and small impurities. Recovery time is minimal, but you may find that the skin visibly recovers after the treatment with small peels. The advantage is that these peels may be used on a regular basis, so the skin condition continues to improve. Medium and deep peelings are intensive treatments that are often done as a course of treatment and used to address skin problems. These include skin ageing, acne, acne scars and pigmentation spots. However, these treatments do require more preparation time and a recovery time with flaking of the skin.
The type of peel can also be differentiated by looking at the ingredients. For example, there are different fruit acids, but also retinoids (based on vitamin A) and the TCA peel. Curious about the technical story behind chemical peels, the effect of each type? Then read my other blog here.
