Gender identity and cosmetic treatments

For years, women's beauty ideal has been drastically different from men's. Whereas round and soft was traditionally considered feminine beauty, sharp, prominent chins and jawlines were seen more as masculine.

Yet there is a subtle development going on, both on a socio-cultural level, and in the cosmetic doctor's chair. Male or female aesthetics are no longer defined as black and white, and the request for a tight jawline or prominent cheekbones is becoming more individualistic and gender fluid.

The social norm seeps into everything that is trend-sensitive, such as fashion, music, and hence the beauty industry. We also see this reflected within the clinic as the demand for cosmetic treatments changes.

Whereas women used to look for a hyaluronic acid filler to return more volume and fullness to the cheeks, for example, we now hear much more often that people want tighter lines and angles. The cheeks may actually be a bit more hollow, as we see back after buccal fat removal en liposuction, but taut and more lifted. The jawline may also be more angular and the chin more pronounced to balance out the nose.

In contrast, the demand for traditionally feminine treatments is actually increasing among male patients as well. There is a demand for rounder cheekbones, something previously associated with the female face, but treatments around lips and mouth can also remedy asymmetry and signs of fatigue in men.

Like our treatments, however, this involves subtle change. Many people who come to us do not necessarily realise they are asking for gender fluidity. Rather, it is a subconscious reflection of what we also see playing out in society.

Either way, we think it is important that you feel especially good about yourself, no matter how you identify. By requesting a no-obligation consultation at one of our clinics, you can look at your face with a doctor and discuss what you like. Together, we will look at the possibilities and draw up a treatment plan. Our goal is for you to feel great and leave the clinic with a smile.
