Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular surgical treatment worldwide among both men and women. With its relatively minor surgery and shorter recovery period, it is a unique treatment to get rid of your symptoms such as overhanging eyelids and feeling heavy, and restore a radiant, fresh look. Personal stories can help you take the plunge. Our dear client had an Upper Eyelid Surgery performed at Skin + Surgery Clinics and wanted to share her personal experience. In this blog: 'my upper eyelid correction', she tells how the first weeks of her recovery period went and gives additional tips. Of course the recovery period goes slightly differently for everyone, our client's story is an example of what recovery can be like that will help you better prepare for any treatment.
'My upper eyelid surgery'
Day 1 after my eyelid surgery
I slept well and the pain is not too bad, I call it more sensitive. It looks worse in the photo than it feels, I think, though I expected to be much bluer. More for stories I hear from others and have seen in the photos. I have to be honest though that those did not have surgery at Skin + Surgery Clinics, so maybe it differs in the technique used.
'Oh I need to chill again'
The first two days you are cooling a lot, the first 48 hours, a quarter of an hour every hour. I had to think about that because an hour goes by in no time. I had neatly possioned peas to cool with as advised, which worked very well
Day 2 after my eyelid surgery
This afternoon, I received a call from Skin + Surgery whether everything went well and how I was feeling. I had to indicate how much pain I had on a scale of 1:10, so I had no pain at all, I describe it more as a strange feeling, rather uncomfortable. As you can see in picture 2, it looks a lot calmer already. I slept well and really try to take it easy for the first week, as advised. You notice that if you do more your eyes also get thicker, this I really wanted to avoid. This is best for recovery, and of course cooling every hour.
Day 3 after my eyelid surgery:
It's just that the stitches and plasters are still on, otherwise you wouldn't see anything on me. I still feel good, actually I have to hold myself back a bit otherwise I would want to do all kinds of things again, but lifting and bending forward are not allowed.
But when you're not in pain, you really have to think about that all the time, because how naturally you actually do everything. And I'm also someone who prefers to do everything myself rather than having to ask so that's a pitfall for me. I hear all day long leave that, I'll do that, you have to take it easy! I have absolutely no pain and that is really nice but then you are more prone to do things again that can sometimes get in the way of your recovery. So my advice is really to keep taking it easy as well.
Day 7 after my eyelid surgery:
The plasters and stitches were allowed to come off. I heard from my brother-in-law that this was quite painful, so I was prepared for anything. So I found it quite exciting because I didn't know what to expect. Well I don't know where it has been, but I sincerely did not feel anything, I felt the plaster more than the suture, so this too was not too bad. So nice that the plasters are off again, they are a bit in the way anyway. After removing the plasters and stitches, I immediately felt relief and had a more open look. So nice to see this after just one week, already so happy with the result and it's only one week after the operation.
During the check-up, the area was cleaned a bit so I don't have to touch it myself. The scar cream you get from the clinic can be applied when all the scars are gone. So I have to wait a few more days with that. The consultant recommended doing this in the evening before going to bed because it is a somewhat greasier substance.
Day 9 after my eyelid surgery:
Today is 2 days after the check-up and I have started applying the scar cream and it is going super well, the scar feels a bit smoother and is becoming more subtle. The result is getting prettier and prettier by the day. It also definitely makes a difference that I have hardly been blue.
14 days after my eyelid surgery:
I am 2 weeks on and the swelling I actually pretty much gone. I still chilled occasionally because I just liked it. After the first week, I don't need to, but it can't hurt either. The recovery period is actually going so well that I even forgot to take photos because it already looks so nice. I am extremely happy with the result and it is only going to get more beautiful.
Tip: Buy good sun protection, at Skin + Surgery Clinics they have a special sun protection for eyelids. This cream spreads easier and is just a bit thicker so it doesn't run into your eyes.
I'm so glad I took the plunge!
Finally, after a year of procrastination, I am so glad I took the plunge. Actually, everything turned out really well. Of course, how fast you recover varies from person to person but with the right guidance it really does make a difference of half. In hindsight, I should have done it much earlier. After my fine experience with Skin + Surgery Clinics, I can definitely recommend this clinic. You really are helped by professionals, get honest and knowledgeable advice. And perhaps most importantly, I really felt at ease and they were interested in me as a person.
