What exactly is eyelid surgery?
At some point, you reach a certain age. Your eyes start drooping heavily. You look tired even though you have slept in until 10 o'clock. But what exactly is eyelid surgery? Where should you start your search?
An eyelid correction (also called an eye lift or blepharoplasty) is an operation in which skin around the eyes is tightened and lifted. It can be done when there is excess skin on the upper eyelids, but a lower eyelid correction is also possible when there is puffiness. It is also possible to do a lower and upper eyelid correction at the same time.
As you pass your fortieth birthday, you see changes around the eyes. The skin loses its elasticity and starts to droop. However, it has more to do with the shape of your eyes than your age. If you have deep-set eyes, then obviously the excess skin is more likely to hang over your eyelashes and thus you are more likely to qualify for eyelid surgery. So, you see, for example, that Asian people, at a younger age perform eyelid surgery. With a special asianeyelid surgery, an arcade crease can be created by yourself.
Benefits of eyelid surgery:
- Eyelid surgery can make you look fresh, awake and more youthful.
- The eyelid surgery procedure takes less than an hour.
- Some eyelid surgeries can be done under local anaesthesia or sedation, so you have less post-op nausea and recovery than with anaesthesia.
- Recovery is pretty straightforward, after a week most of the swelling and bruising will have disappeared and you can return to work.
- Because the incisions are made in the natural crease of your eyelid, they are barely visible once healed.
- If you have severe sagging of your upper eyelid, and your vision is blocked, it is possible to get eyelid surgery medically reimbursed.
Disadvantages of eyelid surgery
- As with any surgery, bleeding or infection can develop after eyelid surgery
- As with most surgeries, the results are not permanent. Some people will need to undergo eyelid surgery again as the ageing process progresses.
- If too much skin is removed, the procedure may affect your ability to close your eyes completely.
What happens during eyelid surgery?
After an anaesthetic injection, the surgeon makes an incision along the natural crease in your eyelid and removes the extra skin and, in some cases, fat. Upper eyelid surgery takes about 30 minutes.
A lower eyelid surgery can be a little more uncomfortable. With this procedure, the incision is made just below or behind the lower lash line or on the back of the eyelid. The aim is to remove extra fat, firm puffiness and, in some cases, lift sagging skin. The procedure takes about 45 minutes
What to expect during eyelid surgery recovery
Full recovery after eyelid surgery can take several months. Most people are back to work after a week. During the first week, it is important to cool the eyes well and sleep upright, with extra pillows. If you wear contact lenses, do not use them for a week after surgery. Touching the wound can increase the risk of infection and you may accidentally pull the wound open. Wearing dark glasses after surgery can help protect your eyes.
When will you see the result and how long will it stay nice
Although a majority of the swelling will disappear within two weeks, it takes up to six months to see the final results of eyelid surgery. Any scarring in the crease of the eyelid or just below the lash line will fade within a year, until it is barely visible.
On average, the results of eyelid surgery remain visible for 10 - 15 years. But as your skin continues to age, you may need a second eyelid correction.

Pleasant and knowledgeable treatment"
For me, I really appreciate that the attention is/feels personal. And both the surgeon, assistant and other staff are friendly, patient, knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions (in the days after the procedure). That inspires confidence.
Skin+Surgery Aftercare and recovery Tips:
- We advise you not to drive a car on surgery day and as long as your vision is obstructed.
- Make-up can be used again after removing the stitches, when all scabs have disappeared.
- We advise you not to smoke until the sutures are removed. Smoking increases the risk of complications.
- We advise you not to expose the scars to UV for 3 months after surgery
- During the first week after surgery, try to avoid bending, heavy lifting, coughing and pushing.
