What is an eyelid correction?

At some point you reach a certain age. Your eyes start to droop. You look tired while you slept in for up to 10 hours. But what exactly is an eyelid correction? Where do you start your search?

An eyelid correction (also called an eye lift or blepharoplasty) is an operation in which the skin around the eyes is tightened and lifted. It can be done when there is excess skin on the upper eyelids, but also when there are puffiness, a lower eyelid correction is possible. It is also possible to do a lower and an upper eyelid correction at the same time.

As you pass your 40th birthday, you will see changes around the eyes. The skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag. However, it has more to do with the shape of your eyes than your age. If you have deep-set eyes, then the excess skin will naturally hang over your eyelashes and you will therefore be eligible for an eyelid correction. For example, you see that Asian people perform eyelid correction at a younger age. With a special asianeyelid operation, an arcade fold can be created yourself.

Benefits of an eyelid correction:

  • Eyelid surgery can make you look fresh, awake and more youthful.
  • The eyelid surgery takes less than an hour.
  • Some eyelid surgeries can be done under local anaesthesia or sedation, so you'll have less post op nausea and recovery than with anaesthesia.
  • The recovery is quite easy, after a week most of the swelling and bruising will have disappeared and you can go back to work.
  • Because the incisions are made in the natural crease of your eyelid, they are barely visible once they have healed.
  • If you have a severe sagging upper eyelid and your vision is blocked, it is possible to get medical reimbursement for the eyelid correction.

Disadvantages of an eyelid correction

  • As with any surgery, bleeding or infection can develop after eyelid surgery
  • As with most surgeries, the results are not permanent. Some people will have to undergo eyelid surgery again as the aging process progresses.
  • If too much skin is removed, the procedure can affect your ability to close your eyes completely.

What happens during eyelid surgery?

After an anaesthetic, the surgeon will make an incision along the natural crease in your eyelid and remove the extra skin and, in some cases, fat. The surgery on the upper eyelid takes about 30 minutes.

Under eyelid surgery can be a bit more inconvenient. With this procedure, the incision is made just below or behind the lower lash line or on the back of the eyelid. The goal is to remove extra fat, tighten bags and in some cases lift sagging skin. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes.

What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Full recovery from eyelid surgery can take several months. Most people are back to work after a week. During the first week, it is important to cool the eyes and sleep upright with extra pillows. If you wear contact lenses, you shouldn't use them for a week after surgery. Touching the wound can increase the risk of infection and you could accidentally open the wound. Wearing dark glasses after surgery can help protect the eyes.

When will you see the result and how long will it stay beautiful

While a majority of the swelling will be gone within two weeks, it takes up to six months to see the final results of an eyelid correction. Any scarring in the crease of the eyelid or just below the lash line will fade within a year, until it is barely visible.

The result of an eyelid correction remains visible on average for 10 - 15 years. But as your skin continues to age, you may need a second eyelid correction.

What are the costs of an eyelid correction

The costs of an upper eyelid correction are 950 euros at Skin + Surgery clinics and 1300 euros for a lower eyelid correction. When choosing a clinic, don't just look at the costs. The costs are determined by the surgeon's experience, type of anaesthesia and degree of aftercare and service. Unfortunately, the eyelid corrections are not reimbursed by most insurers.

Non-cutting alternatives, in addition to an eyelid correction

If you prefer not to have an operation, but you want to look fresh and awake, there are of course other treatment options such as: an eyebrow lift with botulinum toxin or filling the bags with hyaluronic acid fillers.
