When you reach a certain age, your eyes can start to droop heavily and you look tired, even after a good night's sleep. A eyelid surgery, also known as eye lift or blepharoplasty, can then be a solution. But what exactly is eyelid surgery and where do you start your search for the best clinic? An eyelid correction is a surgical procedure in which the skin around the eyes is tightened and lifted. It can be performed to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids and reduce puffiness under the eyes. It is also possible to perform both lower and upper eyelid surgery at the same time.

As you pass your forties, changes can occur around your eyes, such as loss of elasticity and drooping skin. However, it depends not only on your age but also on the natural shape of your eyes. In deep-set eyes, excess skin may be more likely to droop over the eyelashes, which may make eyelid surgery more likely to be necessary. For example, Asian people often undergo eyelid surgery at a younger age. With a special eyelid surgery called Asianeyelid, even an eye crease (arcade crease) can be created.

Discover the benefits of eyelid surgery:

  • Eyelid surgery can give you a fresh, awake and youthful look.
  • Eyelid surgery usually takes less than an hour.
  • Some eyelid surgeries can be performed under local anaesthesia or sedation, giving you less post-operative nausea and a faster recovery compared to anaesthesia.
  • Recovery after eyelid surgery is generally easy; after about a week, most of the swelling and bruising will have disappeared and you can return to work.
  • By placing the incisions in the natural crease of your eyelid, they are almost invisible when healed.
  • In cases of severe sagging of the upper eyelid, where vision is obstructed, an upper eyelid correction may possibly be reimbursed by health insurance.

Find out the possible disadvantages of eyelid surgery:

  • As with any surgery, there is a risk of bleeding or infection after eyelid surgery.
  • The results of eyelid surgery are not permanent. Over time, the ageing process may necessitate another eyelid correction for some people.
  • If too much skin is removed during upper eyelid surgery, it may affect your ability to close your eyes completely.

It is important to discuss these aspects with an experienced eyelid surgeon to make an informed decision about an under or upper eyelid surgery. Contact our clinic for personal advice and more information about the risks and benefits of eyelid correction.

What is eyelid surgery? Upper eyelid surgery by SkinSurgery

What happens during eyelid surgery?

During an eyelid correction, you will first receive an anaesthetic injection. The surgeon then makes an incision along the natural eyelid crease and removes excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue. Upper eyelid surgery usually takes about 30 minutes.
A lower eyelid surgery A lower eyelid correction may cause a little more discomfort. In this, the surgeon makes an incision just below or behind the lower lash line or on the inside of the eyelid. The aim is to remove excess fat, reduce puffiness and possibly lift sagging skin under the eyes. This procedure usually takes about 45 minutes.

How is recovery after eyelid surgery?

Full recovery after eyelid surgery can take several months. Most people can return to work after a week. During the first week, it is important to cool the eyes well and sleep upright with extra pillows. Contact lenses should not be worn for a week after surgery. Do not touch the wound as this may increase the risk of infection or open the wound. Wearing dark sunglasses after eyelid surgery can help protect the eyes.

When will you see the result and how long will it stay nice?

Although most swelling will disappear within two weeks, it can take up to six months before you see the final results of eyelid surgery. Scars in the eyelid crease or just below the lash line usually fade within a year, making them barely visible.
The results of eyelid surgery are visible for an average of 10 to 15 years. However, over time and with the natural ageing process, it may be necessary to consider a second eyelid correction.

What does eyelid surgery cost?

At SkinSurgery, an upper eyelid correction costs €950 and a lower eyelid correction €1300. When choosing a clinic, it is important not to look only at the cost. The cost is determined by the surgeon's experience, the type of anaesthesia and the level of aftercare and service. Unfortunately, eyelid surgery is not covered by most insurers, unless severe sagging of the eyelids is found to obstruct vision.

Non-surgical alternatives to eyelid surgery:

If you prefer not to undergo surgery but want a fresh and awake look, there are other treatment options available, such as an eyebrow lift with botulinum toxin (Botox) or filling puffiness with hyaluronic acid fillers.

Aftercare and recovery tips from SkinSurgery

  • It is not recommended to drive a car on the day of surgery and while your vision is still impaired.
  • You can use make-up again after the stitches have been removed and all scabs have disappeared.
  • It is strongly recommended not to smoke until after sutures are removed, as smoking increases the risk of complications.
  • Protect scars from UV exposure for 3 months after surgery.
  • During the first week after surgery, try not to bend over, lift heavily, cough or push.
