Treatment

Eyelid surgery against heavy eyelids required no admission at our clinic. It is an outpatient treatment and relatively simple procedure performed under local anaesthetic. If you are very nervous, sedative medication can be prescribed. Our patients are allowed to go home after the procedure and after a short rest period. An upper eyelid correction is performed for heavy eyelids. The treatment area is first marked off. After a minute incision, the excess skin and fatty tissue is removed. The scar of the suture falls precisely into the natural skin fold. This is virtually invisible later.

A lower eyelid correction is performed if you suffer from bags under your eyes. Our specialist makes a small incision under the lash line, after which the excess skin and fatty tissue under the eyes is removed. The skin is then pulled together and sutured. The scar under your eyelashes is hardly visible, if at all. An eyelid correction is a painless treatment that takes about 1 hour. You should not drive yourself after the treatment because of the swelling around the eyes and the resulting reduced vision. An eyelid correction has long-term results. You will - with good skin care and a healthy lifestyle - enjoy the treatment for 10 to 15 years.

Aftercare

You are guaranteed at SkinSurgery excellent aftercare. We follow an aftercare protocol to minimise the risks and chances of complications. Swelling and redness after eyelid surgery against heavy eyelids can be effectively controlled with a coolpack or a bag of frozen peas. You place a gauze pad between your eyes and the coolpack or a bag of frozen peas. It helps to sleep with an extra pillow for the first few days so that your head is higher. For mild pain, a paracetamol can be taken. You are allowed to rinse your eyes with a gentle jet of water one day after the procedure. Afterwards, pat it dry without rubbing.

For the first week, avoid heavy physical exercise, lifting, bending and pressing. You should not cut the ends of the stitches yourself. This is done after 7 to 9 days at our clinic. It is out of the question to smoke while the sutures are still in place. Otherwise, your blood vessels will constrict and you run an increased risk of impaired wound healing. You may use make-up again after the stitches have been removed and all scabs are gone. Do not expose the scars to sunlight or tanning bed radiation for the first three months. You will see our doctor for a check-up up to 6 weeks after the treatment.

Risks

Eyelid surgery against a drooping eyelid, or heavy eyelids, do not involve any major risks or complications. These short-term and relatively simple intervention produces only some swelling, redness and bruising around the eyes. These symptoms disappear after a few days. Aftercare after eyelid surgery

Due to our years of experience in performing eyelid corrections, we work with a special pre- and aftercare protocol. This way, you are optimally prepared and recover without complications. Usually, pain relief with paracetamol is sufficient after the operation. We advise you not to drive on the day of surgery and as long as your vision is impaired. You may not use contact lenses for 2 weeks. You can use make-up again after removing the stitches, when all scabs have disappeared. We advise you not to smoke until the sutures are removed. Smoking increases the risk of complications. We advise you not to expose the scars to UV sunlight and/or the sunbed for 3 months after the operation.

When can I wear lenses or make-up again?

We recommend not wearing lenses or make-up for at least 2 weeks after your eyelid surgery. It is important to leave the treated area alone as much as possible so that it can recover properly and you can enjoy a radiant look faster. A week after your eyelid correction, you will come for a check-up and the stitches will be removed for our specialist.

A double eyelid surgery is really your only option to add a permanent crease to a single eyelid. For those not ready for surgery, special tape or glue create a temporary eyelid crease. If you just want to remove excess skin for a more open look (without adding a crease), traditional eyelid surgery, a single eyelid, is a better choice.

What are disadvantages of Asian eyelid surgery?

Post-treatment and check-up after Asian eyelid surgery

There are always at least two check-up moments after an eyelid correction at SkinSurgery. We will see you after a week (about 7-9 days) to remove the stitches and see how you are doing. The doctor will then assess your recovery, wound healing, blueness and swelling. This is also when the doctor will let you know whether you can already start using the scar cream. You will return again after 5-6 weeks for a final check-up. The doctor will then have another good idea of how your recovery is progressing and can already assess the final result. Are there any risks associated with this procedure?

As with any surgical procedure, there are possible complications with double eyelid or Asian eyelid surgery. These include infection, bleeding and reaction to anaesthesia. The rare risks of Asian eyelid surgery include difficulty closing the eyes and dry eyes. In some cases, slight asymmetry of the eyes occurs. This can be distressing during the healing process, but often evens out over time. If really necessary, a skilled plastic surgeon can correct asymmetry, folds that are too high or too low, and folds that are too deep or shallow.

How soon do you see results after Asian eyelid surgery?
