What is an upper eyelid correction?
An upper eyelid correction, also known as blepharoplasty, is a type of cosmetic surgery aimed at correcting excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat tissue from the upper eyelids. This procedure is usually performed for cosmetic reasons, such as reducing a tired appearance or an aged look, but it can also have medical necessity, for example, when drooping eyelids obstruct vision.
Over the years, the skin around the eyes loses its elasticity, which can lead to excess skin folds and fatty deposits in the upper eyelid. This can cause an aged and tired look or sometimes even an angry facial expression. An upper eyelid surgery offers an effective solution by removing this skin and fatty tissue, giving the eyelid a tighter and more youthful appearance.
Why have an upper eyelid correction?
An eyelid correction is the most common cosmetic procedure in the Netherlands among adults aged 40 and over. The reason is almost always the same: the skin on the upper eyelid has loosened due to ageing, causing a fold of skin to hang over the eye. This can be purely a cosmetic concern – a tired appearance even when you are well-rested – or it can cause functional problems such as headaches, a heavy feeling around the eyes, or a restricted field of vision.
During an upper eyelid correction, excess skin is removed precisely within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Sometimes, a thin layer of fat and muscle tissue is also adjusted to achieve a tighter and more lasting result.
Benefits of upper eyelid surgery:
- Improved aesthetics: The most immediate result is a more youthful appearance. By removing excess skin and fat, the natural eye contour is restored, leading to a fresher appearance.
- Increased self-confidence: An improved appearance can have a positive impact on how one sees themselves and how others perceive them, often leading to increased self-confidence.
- Improved vision: For some clients, the skin of the upper eyelids can limit the field of vision. Correcting this skin can lead to better vision and less eye strain.
- Alleviation of fatigue symptoms: People with droopy eyelids often complain of fatigue or heavy eyes at the end of the day. Removing skin can reduce this fatigue.
