Facelift: before and after

Do your wrinkles bother you? And are you simply not looking the way you feel inside? A facelift can be a great solution.

Facelift: before and after

You have probably thought about a facelift for a long time before you actually take the step to the clinic. Perhaps you've been bothered by sagging skin or just wrinkles for much longer, and you often look more tired than you actually feel inside. If you have then taken the first step to come for a consultation, it is also important to see what is actually possible. This is because there are several types of surgical lifts. Which lift might be suitable for you? This is considered on the basis of photos you send.

Once the photos have been assessed by the surgeon and it is clearer which type of lift you are suitable for, a consultation can be scheduled with one of our specialists. At this physical consultation, we discuss your wishes, look at your skin, give all the information regarding the possible surgical lift and explain the pre- and aftercare. But we also discuss your age and general health. Furthermore, we address any questions you may have and photographs are taken.

Several more appointments will follow before actual surgery is performed. More information on this can be found on this page.

Facelift after: recovery

After a facelift, your face and neck will be swollen and blue. At first, it will not look pleasant, but as a rule, you will have little discomfort. Against swelling, you can cool the operated area at home. The rules of life for the weeks after surgery are as follows:

  • Staying at home for the first week
  • Taking it easy for the first few weeks
  • For the first 3 weeks after surgery, do not press, push, lift or bend down
  • Taking 7 days of prescribed medication
  • Keep the pressure bandage on for a few days; the surgeon will give you further information about this
  • Drains are removed after 2 days
  • 2-3 days of liquid food
  • Sutures are removed 1 to 2 weeks after surgery
  • Sports may be resumed slowly after 4 weeks

The final result is visible only after several weeks. However, scars take an average of 6 to 12 months to recover. Initially, the scars will be swollen and red. To aid recovery, we provide scar cream and it is wise to minimise sun exposure.

Prices and fees

Skin + Surgery Clinics provides the highest quality at a competitive price. The cost of the facelift varies per treatment, depending on the extensiveness of the procedure. A facelift is reimbursed only on medical grounds.

Facelift: the procedure

To minimise the possible risks of complications, we kindly ask you to consider the following in preparation for the procedure:

  • Start Arnica drops one week in advance
  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours before the start of the procedure. However, a little water to rinse the mouth or take medication is allowed
  • In consultation with the surgeon, discontinue certain medication for several days
  • Do not drink alcohol for 1 week before and 1 week after surgery
  • Stop smoking 2 weeks before and after surgery. This is because smoking interferes with wound healing and increases the risk of infection
  • That someone comes with you, as you are not allowed to participate independently in traffic

The procedure will take place under local anaesthesia with an intoxication. The duration of the operation depends on the extent of the procedure. It varies between 120-180 minutes. The area to be operated on is marked off by the surgeon. The incision runs from the temple down in front of the ear, then up behind the earlobe and ends (depending on each lift) in the hairline behind the ear.

Are there any risks or complications?

With any surgical treatment, there is a chance of a complication. Therefore, it is important to be aware of the procedure and its possible complications. There is the risk of an allergic reaction, bleeding or infection. The chance of this is very small. Our instruments are single-use and of the best quality. We work with very fine needles and fine diathermy, so as to minimise trauma to the tissue.

Specific complications of a facelift include nerve damage, asymmetry, hair loss, formation of hypertrophic scars and numbness of part of your face. The latter is usually not permanent.

What is the difference between the different lifts?

S-LIFT , is also called the mini lift. Here, only the skin of the cheek is lifted. The underlying supporting tissue is not lifted in this procedure.

MACS lift: MACS lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension lift) here not only the skin of the cheek but also the underlying supporting tissue is included and lifted. The neck is not included

Face/neck lift: In a face/neck lift, not only the skin of the cheek and underlying supporting tissue is lifted via an extended incision behind the ear, but also the neck is lifted along with it.

Aftercare after facelift

Take plenty of rest in the week after your treatment. Make sure someone can help you.
Sleep in the supine position on 2 pillows. This reduces the risk of post-bleeding and swelling. It promotes healing.
In the first two weeks after treatment, do not press, push, lift or bend.
We advise you not to smoke until the sutures are removed. Smoking increases the risk of complications.
Avoid intensive chewing of solid food. This will put pressure on the sutures in the face.
Do not drink hot drinks, such as tea or coffee, to avoid facial congestion.
Swelling and bruising gets worse in the first three days and then slowly subsides.
It is wise to keep moving normally. This is good for circulation and wound healing.
Do not undertake heavy and strenuous work or sporting activities for the first six weeks.
Plan you socialising. Stay home for a week. The treated area will look blue, swollen and bruised for the first week. Scars may also be red and swollen immediately after treatment. This is sometimes a bit of a shock.
One to two weeks after a facelift, you are usually presentable again and can resume your social activities.
We advise you not to expose the scars to UV sunlight and/or the sunbed for 3 months after surgery.
Avoid emotional excitement. After a few weeks, everything will be fine.

Who is a suitable candidate for a facelift?

A facelift is suitable for people who want a natural change in their face, and to remedy sagging that has developed over the years. The degree of sagging skin and underlying tissues determine whether a facelift is necessary. The surgeon will always assess which type of lift can give you the best results. The age for a facelift can range from 40 to 70 years. Although we recommend not doing a surgical lift after the age of 70. The reason is that with age, the lower layer is often seriously sagging and therefore cannot be lifted properly.

Facelift for: the consultation

On the day of the consultation, you will have an appointment with one of our consultants. During the consultation, much attention will be paid to discussing your wishes. Explain well what your wishes and concerns are. We know from experience that a tight facelift is not always the most beautiful facelift. You want to keep your natural facial expression and smile after the procedure, as this gives character to your face. During the intake, your face will be closely examined. After all, every face is different. Following the interview and physical examination, the most appropriate technique will be advised. The consultant will explain exactly what this technique involves and what you can expect regarding the final result after a lift. The difference between different types of lifts will also be explained. The associated scar and recovery time will also be discussed. The average recovery time is about two weeks. Some questions will also be asked regarding your medical background. Indeed, it could happen that, when using certain medicines, it is important to discontinue them temporarily. During the consultation, a lot of information will come your way, so a lot of food for thought. This is why we schedule a second consultation with the surgeon, so that you can be completely sure of your decision.
