The sculptra treatment

If you suffer from volume loss in your face, it can mark your face. Lines become more visible and the skin around your cheeks starts to droop a little more. Sculptra stimulates collagen production and makes your skin firmer, thicker and smoother.

Sculptra at Skin + Surgery

Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that can smooth deep wrinkles, such as the nasolabial fold and marionette lines, and restore volume and firmness. The cheeks and temples are particularly prone to volume loss as we age, and are well-treated.

Consultation with doctor

1.

Consultation with doctor

During the consultation with the cosmetic doctor, ample time is taken to discuss everything. The cosmetic doctor looks at your skin structure and discusses which areas need extra volume and how many treatments this will require. You can also ask all your questions and express your wishes. The doctor will tell you how the treatment will proceed and what you can expect from the final result. There will be a good explanation of the aftercare, any risks and the final result you can expect. Would you like to undergo the treatment? Then everything will be noted in your file and you will sign the treatment agreement together with the cosmetic doctor. Photos are taken for your file, which can be compared with the final result.

Treatment

2.

Treatment

Sculptra will be injected into the spoken areas using a narrow needle. Most filler treatments are done without anaesthesia. Do you find this an unpleasant feeling? Then a numbing cream can be used in consultation with the doctor. To combat swelling, the skin will be cooled with an icepack after the treatment.

3.

Aftercare

3.

Aftercare

After treatment, you can go home immediately. Sometimes the skin will still be a little red and small bruises will appear. This will go away by itself and is not serious. You are advised to avoid sports and alcohol for at least the first 24 hours. Do not bring the skin into contact with extreme heat (tanning bed, sauna).

Massage the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for the first 5 days after your treatment. Do this according to your doctor's advice. Use a moisturiser to reduce friction while massaging.

Risks

What is the aftercare after a Sculptra treatment?

To ensure optimal results and a gradual, long-lasting effect of Sculptra, it is important to follow your doctor's aftercare instructions. Recommendations for aftercare are as follows:

  • Massage the treated areas for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for the first 5 days after your treatment. Do this according to your doctor's advice. Use a moisturiser to reduce friction while massaging.
  • In the first 24 hours after your treatment, apply a cold compress wrapped in a gauze or piece of cloth (do not put ice directly on the skin). This will help reduce any swelling.
  • You may put on make-up a few hours after your Sculptra treatment if there are no complications (open wounds or bleeding).
  • Avoid sun exposure and UV tanning lamps until swelling and redness disappear.
  • Avoid sauna/steam baths for 24 hours.
  • The effect of the Sculptra treatment is visible after about 6 weeks.
  • For best results, 2 or more (repeat) treatments are advised. The doctor will discuss with you how many treatments you may need for your desired results.
  • The effect of Sculptra remains visible for 2 years on average. However, this depends on age, lifestyle and everyone's personal collagen production.

Can I combine Sculptra with wrinkle relaxers or fillers?

Sculptra, filler and wrinkle relaxers: all three have different effects and purposes. Whereas the wrinkle relaxer relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, the filler and Sculptra create more volume and shape. However, they combine well with each other and actually create a 'total picture'. Performed by a good doctor, who listens carefully to your wishes and looks at your face, all treatments can work well together and still be very natural. By combining treatments, get the best out of your skin, restore volume to your vision and soften wrinkles.

What is the difference between wrinkle relaxers, Sculptra and fillers?

Want more volume in moveable areas of the face such as your lips or tear ducts? Then a classic hyaluronic acid filler suitable for you. This one gives instant volume and stays in place.

Sculptra on the other hand, takes longer to give visible effect, about 3-4 months, but is also ideal for more volume. It is a good treatment for people with a lot of volume loss, and ageing skin and sunken cheeks or temples. Sculptra stimulates collagen production and firms the skin, improves its texture and gives you a younger look again.

Wrinkle relaxers are great for dynamic lines created by our expression and facial expressions. Think of forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet.

What are possible risks of Sculptra treatment?

You may feel lumps under the skin immediately after treatment. Often this is swelling and goes away within four weeks. If the lump remains noticeable for longer, it may be a small accumulation of the material used (polu-L-lactic acid) that has not been able to distribute evenly. These bumps take longer to disappear completely.

Should Sculptra bumps appear, they may cause discolouration of the skin. There are cases where these bumps, also known as granulomas, have appeared a year after treatment. They can occur with the wrong injection technique or when the area was not massaged sufficiently. However, there are thinning massage techniques, which can remedy Sculptra side effects if they occur. Furthermore, it is therefore extremely important to have your Sculptra treatment performed by a specialised cosmetic doctor.

Finally, keloid formation and hypertrophic scars can occur after a Sculptra treatment. Sculptra works by stimulating collagen; the biggest cause of keloid formation. If you are sensitive to this, consult with your doctor whether Sculptra treatment is suitable for you.

When and for how long will you see results from Sculptra?

After your Sculptra treatment, your body has to start doing the work to produce more collagen. The first visible changes are visible on average three months after your treatment. After four to six months after your treatment, the results are often optimal.

You will then enjoy your Sculptra treatment for 2-3 years.

How does sculptra treatment work?

A Sculptra treatment consists of a number of injections performed by a doctor. Before the treatments, your goals are discussed and which areas need to be treated. Based on this, the injection sites are marked where the Sculptra will be injected. For many people, it is a painless, quick treatment that takes about 30 minutes. After injection, the area is briefly massaged to allow the Sculptra to spread well and prevent any bumps. You may continue to massage the area yourself for the first week after treatment. The doctor will show you how.

You can often resume your daily activities immediately after your treatment. It is normal to see extra volume in the areas that have been injected. This will subside within a few days. The same goes for any bruising and swelling. If necessary, you can camouflage these with some make-up.
