What is a frown line?
A frown line usually consists of one or more vertical lines between the eyebrows. These are caused by repeated tightening of the muscles that pull the eyebrows together. This often happens unconsciously, for example in:
- concentration
- bright light or peering
- stress
- looking angry or worried
Over time, these lines can get deeper and deeper and even remain visible at rest, which can create a permanently stern or angry look.
Why does a frown line form? (medical explanation)
The frown wrinkle is caused by two muscle groups:
- Corrugator supercilii - left and right above the eyebrows
- Procerus - central between the eyebrows
These muscles pull the eyebrows together, creating vertical folds of skin. When these muscles are frequently and forcefully tightened, permanent lines are created in the skin.
How does botox work for a frown line?
Botox temporarily relaxes the corrugator and procerus muscles. As a result:
- the pulling movement of the eyebrows is reduced
- relaxes the skin between the eyebrows
- soften existing frown lines
- prevents the wrinkle from deepening
The treatment targets only the overactive muscles, preserving your natural expression.
