Eyelid correction

Eyelid correction surgery (medically known as blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure where excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle tissue around the eyelids are removed. The treatment is used for drooping eyelids, heavy eyelids, overhanging eyelids above the eyes, and for under-eye bags. The result is a more open, refreshed gaze that can last for years. At SkinSurgery Clinics, NVCG-certified cosmetic doctors perform eyelid correction surgeries at our locations in Bergschenhoek and The Hague.

Reasons for an eyelid correction?

As we age, the skin and muscles around the eyes lose their elasticity, which can lead to drooping eyelids or bags. This can not only create a tired or older appearance but also lead to physical complaints such as limited vision or headaches. Eyelid surgery often offers an effective and long-lasting solution for heavy eyelids. Whether it's an upper or lower eyelid surgery, the treatment can significantly improve comfort and self-confidence.

Getting rid of a tired look

One of the most common reasons for undergoing eyelid surgery is to improve a tired or gloomy look, which contributes to a more open appearance. Excess skin and fatty deposits around the eyes make you look constantly tired or vacant, even when you're feeling energetic. Eyelid surgery removes or redistributes this excess skin, giving you a fresher, younger look. The eyes are more defined, and the face immediately looks more open and alert after eyelid surgery.

Resolve medical complaints

Eyelid surgery is not only performed for cosmetic reasons but can also address medical issues related to the aging process. Droopy upper eyelids can feel so heavy that it's difficult to keep your eyes open, leading to limited vision, headaches, eye strain, and difficulty concentrating. Upper eyelid surgery can effectively address these issues. By removing excess skin above the eyes, vision is improved and symptoms such as fatigue and eyelid pressure are reduced. In some cases, the treatment is even (partially) performed for medical reasons.reimbursed by health insurance.

Consultation and preparation

Eyelid surgery head illustration

An eyelid correction is always preceded by a free consultation at our clinic. In a relaxed, personal meeting with our expert specialists, you can ask all your questions about the treatment and costs, discuss your wishes, and express your expectations. During the consultation, we will assess your needs and provide you with honest and expert advice.

Our dedicated specialist will assess whether you are eligible for an upper eyelid correction and/or lower eyelid correction and will provide you with a clear explanation of the treatment, aftercare, risks, costs and the expected natural end result. Photos will be taken before the treatment and will later be placed next to photos taken after the treatment.

We completely understand how you feel. Eyelid surgery is a procedure you might have been considering for years, but now you're finally ready to take the plunge, primarily to combat the effects of aging. We're happy to guide you through the process from start to finish. With a specially developed aftercare protocol, you'll recover quickly with minimal swelling and bruising.

2.

The operation itself

An eyelid correction is an effective cosmetic procedure performed to correct tired or drooping eyelids and has long-lasting results. At SkinSurgery Clinics, our experienced specialists perform both upper and lower eyelid corrections under local anesthesia, during a safe and professional day procedure.

Preparation and anesthesia

The eyelid correction is performed under local anesthesia. If you feel very tense before the procedure, we can prescribe calming medication that you take on the day of the treatment. It is important to us that you feel relaxed and at ease during the treatment.

Stitches and scars

After removing the skin and fatty tissue, the eyelid is sutured with a single, fine, continuous suture. This suture is non-dissolving and should not be removed by yourself. You will return for a follow-up visit after one week so we can see how you are doing. This is also when the sutures are removed. This is virtually painless. The scar heals beautifully within the natural crease of the eyelid and is barely visible later, highlighting the quality of the eyelid surgery.

Aftercare after the procedure

The recovery period

The recovery time after eyelid surgery is relatively short. You can go home the same day, but it's important to have someone pick you up: driving is not permitted due to swelling and possible reduced vision. Most people experience minimal pain, at most a slight feeling of pressure or temporary tenderness around the eyes.

Your aftercare is our concern. We work with a specially developed aftercare protocol to ensure a smooth recovery with minimal risk of complications. Full recovery from eyelid surgery can take several months, depending on the individual's response to the surgery. Most people can return to work after a week. Avoid touching the wound, as this can increase the risk of infection or cause it to open. Wearing dark sunglasses after eyelid surgery can help protect your eyelids.

You may shower one day (24 hours) after the procedure and gently rinse your eyes. Gently pat the treatment area dry without rubbing. Start cooling immediately after eyelid surgery to reduce swelling and redness. Cool for 15 minutes every hour with a cold pack or frozen peas, with a gauze in between. For the first few days, sleep with an extra pillow so that your head is higher. For mild pain, paracetamol is sufficient.

Avoid strenuous physical exertion such as lifting, bending, or intense sports for the first two weeks after your eyelid surgery. Stitches will be removed after 7 to 9 days. Do not smoke until then. After 2 to 3 weeks, the incisions will have closed and the scabs will have disappeared, and you can wear makeup and contact lenses again. You will have a check-up after 6 to 8 weeks. Avoid saunas for the first 3 months. We advise you not to expose your scars to UV sunlight and/or tanning beds for 3 months after surgery. UV radiation can discolor scars. Wear sunglasses and use a scar cream with at least SPF 30 once the incisions have closed. This will keep the scars beautiful and almost invisible in the crease of your eye.

Possible complications & risks

4.

Possible complications & risks

An eyelid correction is a relatively minor procedure, with no major risks or risk of complications. It is normal to experience some redness, swelling, and bruising around the eyes after the procedure, especially as you age. You may experience mild pain that subsides on its own or with paracetamol. Occasionally, complications occur, such as post-operative bleeding, eye inflammation, uneven eyelids, cysts, or scarring. If in doubt, always contact the specialists at SkinSurgery Clinics.

Known complications
After an eyelid correction, temporary complaints may occur that are usually part of the normal recovery process. Common complaints are swelling, bruising, a pulling sensation in the eyelids and slight sensitivity or pain. Dry or watery eyes are also common in the first few days after the procedure. These complaints usually disappear within one to two weeks.

Treating complications
In rare cases, complications may occur, such as postoperative bleeding, infection, or an asymmetrical result. The eyelid may also not close properly after surgery, which can cause temporary discomfort or dry eyes. It is important to carefully follow the aftercare instructions provided by your doctor. Cooling with a cold pack, getting plenty of rest, and avoiding exertion or makeup around the eyes will help promote recovery, which is essential during eyelid surgery.

If you have any doubts or persistent complaints, it's always wise to contact the clinic. Prompt follow-up ensures that any complications can be treated quickly and appropriately.

Frequently asked questions about eyelid surgery

Do you have a question that is not answered? Feel free to contact us Monday to Sunday, between 08:00 and 22:00, at the following number or email.

Can an upper eyelid correction be done multiple times in one's life?

Yes, that is possible in some cases. Because skin and tissue continue to change due to ageing and genetic predisposition, an upper eyelid correction may become relevant again later in life.

Is eyelid correction covered by health insurance?

Sometimes, if there's a medical indication. In this case, it's important that you contact your health insurer yourself. We do not work with health insurers.

Are there any risks or complications associated with the treatment?

As with any surgery, there are minor risks such as infection, postoperative bleeding, or asymmetry. These are rare. Discomfort such as swelling and bruising are more common.

Does eyelid surgery hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The injections may feel uncomfortable. Afterward, you may experience some warmth and pressure, but no pain. You may also experience some discomfort and swelling after the treatment.

What is eyelid surgery?

An eyelid correction is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and/or muscle tissue around the eyes. This can reduce the appearance of heavy eyelids and create a fresh, rested appearance.

When am I eligible for eyelid surgery?

You are eligible if you suffer from drooping/heavy eyelids, a tired appearance or medical complaints such as headaches or reduced vision.

How can I best prepare for an eyelid correction?

Good preparation contributes to a smooth recovery and a beautiful result. It's best to stop smoking and taking blood-thinning medications or supplements that increase the risk of bleeding (such as aspirin or certain herbal remedies) two weeks before the procedure. Make sure you are rested and wear comfortable clothing on the day of your treatment. At SkinSurgery, we guide you step by step through our own SkinSurgery app. It contains all the important information, practical tips, and reminders for both before and after your surgery. This way, you always know exactly what to expect and you're never alone.

Can you have an eyelid correction again?

Yes, in some cases, a second procedure is possible. This usually occurs years later, when the excess or sagging skin has reappeared. Your doctor will always assess whether this is safe and appropriate.

I'm nervous about my procedure, what now?

It's perfectly normal to be nervous before a procedure. At SkinSurgery, we take the time to answer your questions and discuss all the steps with you beforehand. This way, you'll know exactly what to expect and feel confident about your treatment. We also have a fully equipped SkinSurgery app that guides you step by step before and after the procedure. Our experienced team recognizes that anxiety can be a factor and offers you the support you need. If desired, the doctor can even prescribe a mild sedative to help you start the treatment feeling relaxed.

Can I still close my eyes properly after eyelid surgery?

Yes, you can close your eyes properly after eyelid surgery. Our doctors never remove more skin than is medically safe. During the treatment, we always consider the eye's natural function, ensuring a safe and comfortable recovery.

Does smoking affect the outcome?

Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, slowing down recovery and increasing the risk of swelling, infection, or unsightly scars. The final result may also be less attractive. For safe recovery and the best results, we recommend quitting smoking completely for at least two weeks before and after the procedure.
