Aftercare for recovery from eyelid surgery

Proper recovery after an eyelid correction begins with the right aftercare. At SkinSurgery, a highly precise aftercare protocol is followed during eyelid correction recovery to minimize risks and the chance of complications. Recovery from an eyelid correction is relatively short, allowing you to resume your daily activities and return to work quickly.

Smoking slows down recovery after an eyelid correction and increases the risk of complications. Therefore, avoid smoking for at least two weeks after the procedure.

You should not wear contact lenses for the first two weeks. Makeup may be applied to the eyelids two weeks after the procedure. This refers not to applying makeup on the eyelids but to cleaning the eye area.

Immediate Aftercare

Immediately after the procedure, cooling is important to reduce swelling and bruising.

Recovery after eyelid surgery

Recovery after an eyelid correction can take some time, but with proper care and attention, most swelling and bruising will gradually subside within 1 to 2 weeks. If you notice any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to contact your doctor. We are always ready to support you and ensure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible.

Eyelid surgery scars

In an eyelid correction, the incisions are always made in the natural folds of the eyelids. This ensures that the scars blend into the fold and are therefore barely visible. It may take some time for the scars to fade completely. Scar cream is also provided to help minimize the recovery time and reduce the likelihood of noticeable scarring.

Immediately after the surgery

After an upper or lower eyelid correction, it is normal to experience temporary swelling, bruising, and mild pain. Most patients can resume their daily activities after about a week, but full healing may take longer. During this time, it is important to care for your eyes properly, get enough rest, and follow your doctor’s instructions.

How long does recovery take after an eyelid correction?

The duration of recovery after an eyelid correction varies from person to person, but for a typical recovery, the process follows a similar pattern for most patients. With our years of experience performing eyelid corrections, we follow a dedicated pre- and post-care protocol. This ensures you are fully prepared and that your recovery proceeds smoothly without complications.

In the first few days after the procedure, you may experience bruising and swelling. These are temporary and usually subside within a few days. We recommend regularly applying a cold compress to your eyes during the first 24 hours after the treatment.

If you get plenty of rest and regularly apply cold compresses in the first few days after the procedure, you can often resume your daily activities about two weeks after the eyelid surgery. The stitches are removed during a follow-up appointment within one week, and the progress of your recovery is reviewed. This is also the moment when your doctor will advise you on which activities you can safely resume.

The full recovery from eyelid surgery takes approximately six months. Most of the swelling usually subsides within two weeks, but the final result of the eyelid correction is only fully visible after about six months. Factors such as the amount of skin or fat removed and how well you follow the aftercare instructions can affect the speed of your recovery.

Follow-up Treatments and Check-ups

After your eyelid surgery, two standard follow-up appointments are scheduled at our clinic. The first check-up usually takes place 7 to 9 days after the procedure. During this appointment, the doctor removes the stitches and dressings, which is quick and almost painless. The doctor will also assess your healing progress, check the condition of the wounds, and advise when you can start applying scar cream.

Approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure, you return for a final check-up. During this appointment, the doctor assesses the ongoing progress of your recovery and can often provide a clear view of the preliminary final result. The before-and-after photos are compared so you can clearly see the effect of the procedure. If you have any questions in the meantime or wish for an additional check-up, we are happy to schedule an extra appointment.

Note: During the first week after the procedure, we advise you to avoid heavy physical activity such as lifting or exercising. The non-dissolvable stitches may feel slightly uncomfortable during this period. Never cut the ends of the stitches yourself. Smoking during the recovery phase is strongly discouraged, especially while the stitches are still in place. Smoking constricts blood vessels and can interfere with wound healing, which may lead to more noticeable scars. Read more about our aftercare instructions.

Recovery advice and tips

To ensure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible, there are several things you can do:

  • Get plenty of rest: Avoid strenuous physical activities and make sure you get enough sleep, especially during the first few days after the procedure.
  • Keep your head elevated: Lie in an upright position and keep your head elevated, especially during the first few nights, to help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid sunlight: Protect your eyes from direct sunlight by wearing sunglasses whenever you go outside. UV radiation can slow down the healing process.
  • Use medications as prescribed: Take the prescribed medications, such as pain relievers or antibiotics, to reduce discomfort and prevent infections.

When should you contact your doctor?

Although many discomforts such as swelling, bruising, and mild pain are normal after a surgical procedure, there are certain symptoms you should pay close attention to. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe pain that does not improve with the prescribed pain medication.
  • Persistent swelling or redness that does not decrease after a few days.
  • Signs of infection, such as yellow or green discharge from the wound or fever.
  • Loss of vision or severe blurred vision that does not improve.

When can I exercise again?

Intense exercise is not recommended for at least 2 weeks after surgery to avoid pressure on the treated area.

How long does it take to see results after eyelid surgery?

In the first few weeks after the procedure, there is often some swelling and bruising. After two weeks, you'll already see a fresher, more open look. However, the final result takes time: the tissue needs to fully heal, and the scars need time to fade further. This process typically takes six months to a year. Only then will the final result be clearly visible and will you achieve the most natural effect.

How long should you cool after a treatment?

To reduce swelling and bruising, it's advisable to cool the area for the first 24 hours after the procedure: ideally, for about 15 minutes every hour. Use a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a clean cloth. You don't need to cool the area overnight; rest and a slightly elevated sleeping position will support recovery.

Can I wear makeup immediately after the procedure?

No, you should wait about 2 weeks before applying makeup around the eyes.

What can I do to speed up recovery?

Use cold compresses in the first few days, avoid alcohol and nicotine, sleep with your head elevated, and follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

How long does recovery take after an eyelid correction?

Most people experience 7 to 10 days of recovery. Swelling and bruising gradually subside. The stitches are removed after 5 to 7 days.

What does the scar look like after healing?

The scar is usually barely visible and falls precisely within the natural crease of the eyelid. It fades significantly after a few months.

When will the stitches be removed?

The stitches are usually removed 5 to 7 days after the procedure.
