Consultation with the doctor

Eyelid surgery against heavy eyelids is always preceded by a consultation with one of our qualified and experienced doctors. You can easily book an appointment for a free consultation via our website. During the personal interview with our surgical doctor, you can indicate what bothers you, what eye complaints you have and what you would like to see changed. The consultation takes place in a relaxed setting so that you feel completely at ease. You will have the conversation with the doctor treating you.

You may during the free consultation ask all your questions about treatment, aftercare, risks and costs. You will get expert and honest answers. Your eligibility for an eyelid correction will be examined. You will receive clear explanations about the entire treatment process and the expected result. During this first consultation, photos are taken of you before treatment. At a later stage, these are compared with the photos taken after the surgery. You can thus see the positive effect of an eyelid correction against heavy eyelids.

Treatment

Treatment

Eyelid surgery against heavy eyelids required no admission at our clinic. It is an outpatient treatment and relatively simple procedure performed under local anaesthetic. If you are very nervous, sedative medication can be prescribed. Our patients are allowed to go home after the procedure and after a short rest period. An upper eyelid correction is performed for heavy eyelids. The treatment area is first marked off. After a minute incision, the excess skin and fatty tissue is removed. The scar of the suture falls precisely into the natural skin fold. This is virtually invisible later.

A lower eyelid correction is performed if you suffer from bags under your eyes. Our specialist makes a small incision under the lash line, after which the excess skin and fatty tissue under the eyes is removed. The skin is then pulled together and sutured. The scar under your eyelashes is hardly visible, if at all. An eyelid correction is a painless treatment that takes about 1 hour. You should not drive yourself after the treatment because of the swelling around the eyes and the resulting reduced vision. An eyelid correction has long-term results. You will - with good skin care and a healthy lifestyle - enjoy the treatment for 10 to 15 years.

Aftercare

3.

Aftercare

You are guaranteed at SkinSurgery excellent aftercare. We follow an aftercare protocol to minimise the risks and chances of complications. Swelling and redness after eyelid surgery against heavy eyelids can be effectively controlled with a coolpack or a bag of frozen peas. You place a gauze pad between your eyes and the coolpack or a bag of frozen peas. It helps to sleep with an extra pillow for the first few days so that your head is higher. For mild pain, a paracetamol can be taken. You are allowed to rinse your eyes with a gentle jet of water one day after the procedure. Afterwards, pat it dry without rubbing.

For the first week, avoid heavy physical exercise, lifting, bending and pressing. You should not cut the ends of the stitches yourself. This is done after 7 to 9 days at our clinic. It is out of the question to smoke while the sutures are still in place. Otherwise, your blood vessels will constrict and you run an increased risk of impaired wound healing. You may use make-up again after the stitches have been removed and all scabs are gone. Do not expose the scars to sunlight or tanning bed radiation for the first three months. You will see our doctor for a check-up up to 6 weeks after the treatment.

Risks

Risks

Eyelid surgery against a drooping eyelid, or heavy eyelids, do not involve any major risks or complications. These short-term and relatively simple intervention produces only some swelling, redness and bruising around the eyes. These symptoms disappear after a few days. In occasional cases, a post-operative haemorrhage, eye inflammation, numbness of the eyelid margin, uneven eyelids, cysts or scarring may occur. If in doubt, contact the specialists at SkinSurgery. Our doctors are readily available.

Heavy eyelids

Heavy eyelids - Pendulous eyelids, heavy eyelids, overhanging eyelids, it kind of boils down to the same thing. Heavy eyelids describe the feeling that droopy eyelids have on the eyes. Heavy eyelids can create a tired look and even give you a headache. Because heavy eyelids compress your eyes, you often cannot see as well. Many people with heavy eyelids focus their eyes by squeezing them slightly shut. This constant squeezing of the eyes can cause headaches. Maybe you recognise these discomforts?

Therefore, many choose to undergo eyelid surgery to get rid of their symptoms. Although a large proportion of these eyelid corrections are done for medical reasons, there is of course the aesthetic aspect that also plays a role. In principle, eyelid surgery for heavy eyelids can also be done at a hospital.

What is often missing is the cosmetic eye of a specialised cosmetic surgeon. After all, there is an art to creating a beautiful result. For example, a cosmetic specialist looks more at the proportion in the face.

You have come to the right place at SkinSurgery if you want to do something about your heavy eyelids and have an aesthetically pleasing result. For heavy eyelids, we recommend an upper eyelid correction. Should you also suffer from drooping skin under the eyes, a lower eyelid correction is also interesting. In addition, SkinSurgery also offers double eyelid corrections (also known as Asian eyelid surgery). Want to know more about the different types of eyelid surgery we offer? Sometimes, if there's a medical indication. In this case, it's important that you contact your health insurer yourself. We do not work with health insurers.

When am I eligible for eyelid surgery?

You are eligible if you suffer from drooping/heavy eyelids, a tired appearance or medical complaints such as headaches or reduced vision.

How can I best prepare for an eyelid correction?

Good preparation contributes to a smooth recovery and a beautiful result. It's best to stop smoking and taking blood-thinning medications or supplements that increase the risk of bleeding (such as aspirin or certain herbal remedies) two weeks before the procedure. Make sure you are rested and wear comfortable clothing on the day of your treatment. At SkinSurgery, we guide you step by step through our own SkinSurgery app. It contains all the important information, practical tips, and reminders for both before and after your surgery. This way, you always know exactly what to expect and you're never alone.

Can you have an eyelid correction again?

Yes, in some cases, a second procedure is possible. This usually occurs years later, when the excess or sagging skin has reappeared. Your doctor will always assess whether this is safe and appropriate.

I'm nervous about my procedure, what now?

It's perfectly normal to be nervous before a procedure. At SkinSurgery, we take the time to answer your questions and discuss all the steps with you beforehand. This way, you'll know exactly what to expect and feel confident about your treatment. We also have a fully equipped SkinSurgery app that guides you step by step before and after the procedure. Our experienced team recognizes that anxiety can be a factor and offers you the support you need. If desired, the doctor can even prescribe a mild sedative to help you start the treatment feeling relaxed.

Can I still close my eyes properly after eyelid surgery?

Yes, you can close your eyes properly after eyelid surgery. Our doctors never remove more skin than is medically safe. During the treatment, we always consider the eye's natural function, ensuring a safe and comfortable recovery.

Does smoking affect the outcome?

Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, slowing down recovery and increasing the risk of swelling, infection, or unsightly scars. The final result may also be less attractive. For safe recovery and the best results, we recommend quitting smoking completely for at least two weeks before and after the procedure.
