Oversized labia - "What are oversized labia?" is a logical question that comes to mind when you hear this term. Basically, there is no "normal" vagina because every vagina is different and unique. In that respect, they are like snowflakes. So when do we qualify labia as too big? How big "too big" is actually up to you.

When your labia are large, they often dangle downwards. This can apply to the inner and outer labia. This is quite normal and occurs in many women. Although there is no such thing as the 'normal vagina', it does appear that a certain type of vagina is commonly shown in adult entertainment. Funnily enough, this type of vagina is the least common, but because it is so common in adult entertainment, many think this is the 'normal' vagina. We are talking about a vagina whose labia minora are completely hidden by the labia majora and both sets of lips rest on the pelvic bone.

But when are labia too big? This may not be the answer you are looking for, but it is the most honest one we can give you. Labia are too large when you perceive them to be too large (and disturbing). There are two types of procedures to address excessively large inner labia. Peripheral resection and wedge resection. Both are done under anaesthesia. Edge resection involves trimming the "excess" protruding edges of the labia. A wedge resection preserves the original labial edges by cutting wedge-shaped flakes of skin from the centre of the labia minora, bringing the remaining skin together with dissolvable sutures. We also offer labia correction for the outer labia.

The different types of normal labia

Asymmetrical inner labia
If one inner lip is longer, thicker or larger than the other, it is considered asymmetrical. It is actually quite normal for the vulva's labia minora not to be exactly equal. Often, you won't even notice this, unless the difference is so great that it is noticeable. For example, if one labia is very long and the other is not.

Large inner labia
The inner lips are often longer than the outer lips, making them stick out. This difference in length can be more subtle, with the inner lips peeking out just a little.

Prominent outer labia
Prominent outer lips sit much lower on your vulva. The skin can be thick and swollen or thin and a little loose - or somewhere in between.

Long, dangling inner labia
This is a variation of the prominent inner lips. They can dangle up to an inch (or more) past your outer lips. They may even hang outside your underwear. You may notice extra skin or folds.

Long, dangling outer labia
This is a form of prominent outer lips. They are usually on the larger side, often leaving the skin thin and loose. As with dangling inner lips, it is possible for the folds to hang outside your underwear. This can give your inner lips a bit more exposure.

Small, open labia
Your outer lips are flat and rest against your pubic bone, but are slightly separated, revealing your labia minora.

Small, closed labia
The outer lips are not set apart in this case, so they completely hide and contain you inner lips. Although this type of vulva is often seen in adult entertainment, it is actually the least common type of vulva in general.
