What you need to know about aftercare and recovery
An labiaplasty, also called labia correction, is a relatively minor surgical procedure, but the recovery period is tough and takes several weeks. The recovery process of a labia correction can be accompanied by some pain and swelling in the pubic area in the first few weeks. We will give you medication to promote a speedy recovery. In addition, you can take paracetamol for support. By carefully following the aftercare instructions, the risk of complications is limited as much as possible. The result of a labia correction is permanent.
After 1 and approximately 3 months, a check-up appointment will follow with one of our specialists to assess the recovery.
Direct aftercare labiaplasty
After labiaplasty, there is virtually no bruising. However, the labia can be considerably bruised and swollen, which is a natural reaction after any surgical procedure. It is important for a good recovery from labiaplasty to follow our aftercare instructions in the first six weeks, which you will receive during the intake. Swelling and discomfort
Swelling and a sore feeling in the pubic area are normal reactions after a labiaplasty. These complaints are usually the most severe in the first few days after the procedure and the labia can feel tight and tense due to the swelling. Avoid wearing tight pants or sitting for long periods in the first week after the operation. The swelling usually gradually decreases within one to two weeks.
Cooling and pain relief
It is important to start cooling every hour immediately after the treatment to reduce swelling. An ice pack is recommended for this (preferably wrapped in a cloth). We recommend that you continue to cool the treated area regularly in the days following the labiaplasty until the swelling begins to subside. Counter pressure is also recommended, but be careful. You can think of a hard chair or rolled up towel.
Hygienic care
In addition, it is also important to keep the wound and the treated area clean. Rinse at least twice a day with lukewarm water (you can simply shower) and after each visit to the toilet and then pat it dry with a clean towel. The wound is sutured with dissolvable stitches after the labiaplasty and is not bandaged. It is advisable to use sanitary towels to ensure that any blood loss is absorbed. The wound and the area around it may be smeared with a cream.
Importance of rest
After the operation, it is best to leave the wound area alone as much as possible, so that it can recover well after the procedure. Your body needs time to recover. In the first four to approximately six weeks after the procedure, we advise against making extra efforts. This includes heavy physical labor, heavy lifting, cycling and sports. It is also not advisable to have sex during the recovery period. The advice is to wait six weeks before doing this.
Bleeding and other symptoms
Some minor bleeding in the first 24 hours after surgery is normal, but excessive bleeding or persistent symptoms should be reported to the clinic immediately. Other symptoms to look out for include increasing redness, pus formation or fever, which may indicate an infection. In addition, temporary numbness or hypersensitivity may occur in the treated area. In most cases, these symptoms disappear on their own within a few weeks to months. By following your doctor's instructions carefully, you will help ensure optimal healing.
Follow-up check
Good aftercare in the weeks following the labiaplasty is essential for an optimal and safe recovery. At SkinSurgery Clinics we schedule standard check-up appointments to closely monitor the healing process and to detect any complications at an early stage. We check that everything is going well and during these appointments you have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns with your treating physician. In this way, together we ensure a pleasant and successful recovery process.

When should you go back to the doctor?
After approximately 1 month and again after 3 months, you are expected for a check-up appointment with one of our experienced doctors. During these moments, we check whether the recovery is going as expected and whether there are any residual complaints or asymmetry. Every procedure involves risks. If complaints or uncertainties arise in the meantime, we advise you to contact us sooner for an additional check-up.
What is assessed during the checks?
During the follow-up, we will look at wound healing, any scarring, symmetry of the result and sensitivity of the treated area. The doctor will assess whether there is a normal healing response or whether additional care is needed. In addition, we will discuss whether you are experiencing the desired result after the wound has completely healed. Your recovery experience is central to these discussions, so that we can adjust the aftercare if necessary.

It is important to follow the aftercare instructions carefully, as this will significantly reduce the chance of complications. In addition, we strongly recommend that you stop smoking at least one month before and one month after the procedure, as smoking negatively affects the healing process and increases the risk of infections.
Also keep in mind that complete symmetry of the labia cannot be guaranteed; they are often naturally asymmetrical. The surgeon will of course strive to balance the inner and outer labia as much as possible
Scars
After a labiaplasty, small scars almost always remain, but these are usually subtle and barely visible in the natural folds of the body. Most scars fade within a few months and rarely cause complaints. In exceptional cases, they may feel slightly thickened or temporarily numb. By taking good care of the wound and avoiding friction and irritation, you support beautiful scar formation.
Pain and discomfort
Labiaplasty is generally well tolerated by our clients. In the first few days after the procedure, you may experience pain, a pulling sensation or a soreness in the treated area. This is normal and can usually be relieved with the prescribed medication and additional painkillers such as paracetamol. Rest, cooling and avoiding pressure on the wound area are essential for a more comfortable recovery. Contact us if the pain does not subside after a few days or if it increases.
Infections
Although infections are rare after labiaplasty, they remain a potential risk. Symptoms of infection include redness, swelling, warmth, pus formation, or fever. Good hygiene and strict adherence to aftercare instructions are important to prevent infection. If you do notice signs of infection, contact SkinSurgery Clinics immediately for timely treatment.
