Tyndall effect with tear duct filler and the alternative with Rejuran around the eyes

Blue-grey discolouration after filler under the eyes? Read what the Tyndall effect is, how to recognise it, what you can do about it and when Rejuran around the eyes may be a better alternative.

Tyndall effect at tear duct filler

Blue-grey discolouration under the eyes after filler treatment can fit with the Tyndall effect. In this blog, we explain what it is, how to distinguish it from a bruise, what solutions there are and when a skin-enhancing treatment like Rejuran around the eyes is sometimes a suitable alternative.

SkinSurgery Clinics treats clients in The Hague and Bergschenhoek with a medical intake and a tailor-made plan, especially in the vulnerable periocular area.

What is the Tyndall effect?

The Tyndall effect is a blue-grey or grey shine which can occur when hyaluronic acid filler too superficial is placed in or directly under the skin. Light then scatters differently through the product, which can give the skin a blue-grey glow. You see this most in thin skin, such as the teardrop and the area under the eyes.

Important: the Tyndall effect is annoying and cosmetically disturbing, but is usually well assessable and often treatable.

How do you recognise Tyndall effect versus a bruise?

Many people doubt whether they have a Tyndall effect or “just” a bruise. These are the typical differences:

Tyndall effect

  • Colour: blue-grey to grey, often “cool” in hue
  • Gradient: stays relatively the same, does not pull away in colour phases
  • Location: often exactly where filler is, often in a line or zone
  • Sometimes: mild swelling or visible subcutaneous irregularity

Bruising (haematoma)

  • Colour: purple, red, later green and yellow
  • Course: changes visibly by day and pulls away
  • Common: pressure soreness in the first few days

In doubt? Have it assessed. Especially under the eyes, the right diagnosis determines policy.

Why is the Tyndall effect common under the eyes?

The periocular skin is thin and more transparent. As a result, you see superficial product placement faster. Additional factors that increase the likelihood:

  • Injection depth too shallow
  • Too much product in a limited area
  • Incorrect product choice for thin skin
  • Anatomy: thin skin, visible vascular structures, little “coverage”
  • Moisture retention: some fillers can attract more swelling under the eyes, making the area look unsettled

What can you do if you have Tyndall effect?

The policy depends on the product, quantity, depth and how long it is present.

1. Medical assessment
First, we determine whether it is really Tyndall or something else, such as:

  • Bruising or residual discolouration
  • Superficial bumps due to placement
  • Lymphatic swelling or fluid retention
  • Skin pigment or vascular component

2. Waiting can sometimes, but not always
In mild cases, things can calm down, but a true Tyndall effect does not always disappear spontaneously in the short term.

3. Dissolving HA filler may be an option
If hyaluronic acid filler is too superficial, your doctor may sometimes consider enzyme treatment to break down the product in a controlled way. This is a medical decision, with its own risk considerations, and belongs to an experienced practitioner.

4. Only then re-establish a plan
Only when the area is calm again will we discuss again what your goal is: volume, contour, or just skin quality.

When is Rejuran around the eyes a good alternative?

Sometimes people want under the eyes especially:

  • A fresher look
  • Improvement of fine lines
  • Improved skin quality and hydration
  • Less “crepey” skin texture

If the primary problem is skin quality and not a true volume defect, then a polynucleotide skin booster such as Rejuran may be appropriate. Rejuran is not a volume filler. It is used in practice as a skin repair treatment where the aim is to gradually make the skin look stronger, more even and better hydrated.

In the eye area, a variant intended for the periocular area is often chosen, with a treatment plan in spa form.

Rejuran and Tyndall effect: what's the connection?

Rejuran does not “resolve” a Tyndall effect if superficial hyaluronic acid filler is still present. It is especially relevant in these situations:

  • You mainly want skin improvement rather than re-volume after correction of a previous filler complication
  • You have thin skin under the eyes and want a treatment with a focus on texture, hydration and glow
  • You are looking for a plan that is less about padding and more about skin condition

The doctor always assesses whether the cause of your symptoms is volume, fluid, skin quality or product placement. That determines the appropriate route.

What does a Rejuran trajectory usually look like?

Many clinics work with a cure, often:

  • 3 treatments about 3 to 4 weeks apart. Thereafter, possible maintenance depending on skin response and desire.

Results are usually gradual. Around the eyes, temporary swelling or small papules may be a little more visible after the injection, precisely because of the thin skin.

Frequently asked questions about Tyndall effect and Rejuran

Is Tyndall effect dangerous?
Usually, it is mostly cosmetically disturbing. It does require medical assessment to know for sure what causes it.

Can Tyndall leave on his own?
Sometimes it can diminish, but a permanent blue-grey appearance caused by superficial hyaluronic acid filler does not always disappear on its own in the short term.

Is Rejuran better than filler under the eyes?
It depends on the problem. For skin quality, Rejuran may be appropriate. In case of real volume breakdown, another strategy may be better. The right indication is everything.

When should I contact immediately?
In case of increasing redness and heat, severe pain, rapid increase in swelling, fever, pus formation or if you feel worried.
