What exactly is a facelift?

A facelift is a cosmetic surgery procedure to make the face look younger. The procedure can reduce sagging or creases of the skin on the cheeks, jawline and any other changes that occur in the face with age.

As you get older, the appearance and shape of your face changes due to normal age-related changes. The skin becomes less elastic and looser, and fat deposits decrease in some parts of your face and increase in others. The following age-related changes in your face can be reduced with a facelift:

Sagging appearance of your cheeks
Excess skin at the mandible (jaws)
Deepening the fold of skin from the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth
Sagging skin and excess fat in the neck (if the procedure includes a neck lift)
A facelift will not reduce fine folds or wrinkles in your skin or damage caused by sun exposure. There are other cosmetic solutions for this.

Facelift surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure. It may involve local anaesthesia and sedatives or general anaesthesia. The procedure can take 2 to 5 hours and you can normally go home the same day after surgery.

In a traditional facelift, the surgeon makes an incision in front of the ear, extending into the hair or hairline and behind the ear into the hair-bearing scalp. The surgeon lifts the skin from the deeper facial muscles and fat, gently pulls the skin in an upward and posterior direction and removes the excess skin. They can tighten the deeper tissues of the face.

A small incision may also be made under the chin to tighten the skin and deeper tissue of the neck. We call this a neck lift. The incisions are then closed with sutures and possibly staples. After your facelift in Leidsche Rijn, bandages will be applied to properly support your face. It is very important to rest after a facelift.

You will be given all the information about the facelift treatment and explained the entire treatment process, from precaution to aftercare. You will be told what end result you can expect from the treatment. Photographs will be taken beforehand and laid next to the post-surgery photos. This allows you to see the natural result of the facelift beautifully.

Treatment

A facelift is outpatient treatment, which do not require admission. You may return home after the operation and a short rest period. However, you are not yet allowed to drive. In this case, please bring someone with you to our clinic or have someone pick you up by car after the treatment. Various facelift treatments are performed under anaesthesia in our clinic: an S-lift or mini-lift, a more extensive MACS lift and an extensive neck facelift. The excess skin in the face and possibly the neck is removed. In a MACS lift and neck facelift, the underlying connective and muscle tissue is also tightened and the sagging fatty tissue is returned to its original location.

The treatment time depends on the kind of facelift. The S-lift takes about 1.5 hours. In this, only the skin of the cheek is lifted. The MACS lift takes about 2 hours, lifting both the skin of the cheek and the underlying supporting tissue. Your jawline becomes tighter and your nasolabial fold more prominent. The extended neck facelift takes a little more time. You get a clearer jaw and neckline and a tighter, more youthful face shape as a result of this procedure. The deep skin folds disappear. The first result is visible after just 1 to 2 weeks. The final, natural result shows after a few months to a year. The result lasts for a long time. Skin ageing does continue. A facelift can be repeated after 10 to 15 years.

Aftercare

We are happy to guide you through the entire treatment and healing process. We work with a specially developed pre- and aftercare protocol, so that you are maximally prepared and enjoy your recovery. Your face will be slightly swollen and feel tight for the few days after the facelift. For mild post-operative pain, taking a paracetamol will suffice. The swelling and bruising will disappear on their own within a few weeks. In the first week, get plenty of rest and sleep supine on an extra pillow. This helps against swelling, reduces the risk of subsequent bleeding and promotes the healing process. Avoid pressing, squeezing, bending or lifting in the first three weeks. Do not engage in heavy physical exertion in the first six weeks.

You reach the best outcome and fastest healing with a healthy lifestyle. At least stop smoking until the sutures are out, do not drink hot drinks to avoid facial congestion and do not chew solid food intensively. Otherwise, this will put pressure on the sutures in the face. Keep moving normally after the facelift to keep the blood circulation going and the wound healing quickly. You will be presentable again after one to two weeks and able to resume your daily social activities. In the first three months, do not expose your facial skin to bright sunlight or go under a tanning bed or to the sauna.

A facelift is a common surgical procedure at Skin + Surgery Clinics, with a very low risk of complications. An allergic reaction, subsequent bleeding or infection may occur in some cases. However, this is rare, as our highly qualified and experienced specialists work according to the state-of-the-art treatment techniques and use the best tools.

Preparing for your facelift Utrecht

Preparing for your facelift? You definitely should! Preparing for a facelift is similar to the preparation you would do for any other surgery. Before surgery, we will ask a few things of you. These will be preoperative evaluation questions and, in some cases, a blood test. Based on this, we may ask you to stop taking certain medications or adjust your dosage before the procedure.

Other points to ask:

Stop smoking.
Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers and herbal supplements to reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising.
You will need someone to take you to the operating theatre, as you are likely to be under general anaesthesia
